Hoody and I went to the Inverkeithing depot a couple of weeks ago and took a Saab 9000 to bits. It had done 59k and was immaculate. I've also seen a Volvo 740 with 17k on the clock which was minted. These are scrappage cars, such a shame that they end up like this

We will not provide you with any tools so you must bring your own tools when you come to remove parts. You may bring hand tools and battery-powered tools with you but you may not use or bring with you any power tools or any cutting/grinding equipment.
Just had a read through how it works and this caught my eye.

Something to be aware of if you're ever going to get parts.

I thought scrappage cars had to be crushed. Glad to know they don't and that the parts will keep other cars going.

Scrappage cars just have to be scrapped - parts can be removed but then the basic shell has to die. Ironically, it may mean an increase in available spare parts for a while.

I have bought a 1998 Rover 114 GSi from U Pull IT with full leather and alloys etc. I'll go and strip it in 2 weeks in York. Price? £59. Thanks for the pointer, Neo.

That's the thing, Brad: You've not really 'bought' it. You've purchased the right to remove parts from this vehicle. The ownership of it remains with the company. And your 'right' to remove stuff from it is totally dependant on their allowing you to do so, which they can allow or deny whenever they fancy.

Me? I reckon it's a racket. There's loads of these places advertising now. In print, it looks like car buff heaven. I don't see how it benefits anybody outside the 'motor vehicle dismantling' trade.

It certainly costs the average hobbyist a lot more to use this service than it would were he to approach his local 'scrappy' and pay for the bits he removes from the carcasses therein........

Thats where your wrong Gary, they also have a scheme where you pay £25 and they give you a wheel barrow and you can put as much as you can carry in the barrow for your £25

That's right, I understand that. That's a great deal in my mind. The contract says that I have bought the right to take off anything that I want apart from the Cat, the Battery and, in my case, the engine and gearbox. I can take wheels, seats, bonnet....whatever. All for £59. Barrrrrrrrgain.

If you need a hand Brad give me a shout.

I'm sure Andy and I can have it stripped out in a couple of hours.

Mal.

Took 4 of us 3 and a half hours to strip a saab 9000 down and load it into a van,for £40 extra they remove engine and gearbox for you so when you arrive it is just the shell to strip,i bid on an engine only for the Saab on ebay and went to £250,it sold for £322 in the end,the upull it Saab cost me £226(£150+engine removal+vat). The car we dismantled had under 60,000 miles on it and so far i have sold a couple of bits and recouped £100 so the new engine gearbox now stands me at £126,bloody great idea :D

No way??!! Seriously?

That IS a racket. People who maybe just want a door handle will be stripping out a barrowload of bits, then? To get good value for their £25?

This'll make sure the car shells are going to the crusher much sooner than they would selling the parts on them one by one.

They should be PAYING punters for this, not charging them!

I think you are getting the wrong idea Gary, you can buy parts just like a normal scrappie too with a fixed pricelist, the wheelbarrow is just another good idea.

http://www.u-pull-it.co.uk/info.html?vi ... tPricelist

a door handle is £2
